History
Here at Bear Bum, we are excited to be able to offer these amazing homemade, natural products to you. Throughout history, the black bear has been symbolized not only for its beauty but for its healing properties as well. Native Americans learned early in history the benefits of bear oil and passed it onto the early settlers upon their arrival.
Bear oil has been used and believed to be one of the best leather dressings known. Bear oil was used on buckskins of the past and is still used on work boots of today. But the benefits don’t stop at the boots. For years, bear oil has also been used for cooking from pan frying to making the finest pastries.
Bear oil contains the same lipids and fats that are found in human skin which make it very beneficial to the acceleration and healing of damaged skin. Bear oil contains high levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The oil is the highest source of an essential fatty acid, called CLA which is responsible for our skin's ability to retain moisture.
Unlike petroleum based products, the lipids found in bear oil are believed to prevent dryness at the cellular level without suffocating your skin's barrier.
Medicinally bear oil has been known to repair dry, chapped, cracked skin. It has been used to help relieve itching, and the healing of bug bites, minor burns, cuts and sunburn. Bear oil has also been used to help fight the itching, flaking and dryness of eczema by moisturizing the skin and helping to regenerate skin cells. In history bear oil has been used to help reduce muscle stiffness, relieve the pain of arthritis, tendonitis and sore joints.

Our bear fat is rendered from 100% legal and locally harvested bear right here in the great state of Maine.
Our story
BearBum products are made from 100% legal and locally harvested. We own a wild game butcher shop in northern Maine called WildWoods Custom Butchering. We butcher bears harvested by hunters. To most hunters bear lard is waste. Prior to starting Bear Bum Essentials, I used the lard for our personal use, making soaps, salves and lip lube for ourselves. We loved it so much we wanted to share!
